Would You Like to Submit Some Astro-Info of Your Own?

The MPAS Web-site is receiving a total overhaul. One of the main aims of developing the new website and having our own domain was to add the normal dynamics a fully fledged website provides.

This new site, apart from its general face lift, allows for flexibility in design and content. Valuable information from the old site has been transferred to the new site, and new sections have been introduced to increase the topic scope.

Here is where interested members could lend a hand to increase the value of our site to other MPAS members and the general astronomy community.

Importantly, we are not trying to reinvent the same information that is already available on the net, but to introduce new information sourced from member’s experiences.

Areas members may be interested to contribute topics on:

·        Up Coming Events
These are not to be limited to MPAS events, but other interesting events that can be advertised for the members benefit. For example the date of the next field trip to the ASV’s Leon Mow Dark Sky Site, Bentleigh street festival, or the date of the next Ken Bryant Scope Day.

·        Astronomical Information
Members may have an area of interest they want to write about, or have already written something about, that they would like to have published on the MPAS site. Thinking of information sourced from members, I have already read a number of interesting articles on telescope construction and guides on astronomy for beginners’.

Members may even wish to do their own equipment reviews.

·        Astrophotography
This section will be broken into two areas: Tips and Tricks, and Members Photos.

In the Tips and Tricks area, members who are interested to share their experiences are encouraged to provide articles with photos. These may include particular equipment combinations that have yielded favourable results for them.

In the members photo section, members will be given their own web section that presents their efforts. But this section is more than just a showcase. Members are required to provide some pertinent information about how these photos where achieved. A standard submission format is requested for publishing these photos.

·        Meteor Viewing Tips
Members interested in meteor viewing may wish to share their knowledge on when best viewing times will be throughout the year. This would help to coordinate people with similar interests to participate in viewing special events (see below).

·        School Activities
The Committee can set up a standard advertisement for this section promoting the Society’s services to the community. It’s something that could be used in conjunction with a telephone or email promotion.

·        Web & Astronomy Software Links
Member’s who come across interesting websites, or perhaps their own websites, can send the link through for consideration of inclusion to the MPAS web-link pages.

The new MPAS site is looking for members help. The site is not intended to be a monthly updated resource, but a general info site for the members and the community.

Submission Guidelines

Please Note: If you are unable to comply to the below guidelines, this will not mean the exclusion of your information. These guidelines are in place to simplify the introduction of your information into the website with minimum delay and maximum compliance.

Photo Submission Guide

All photos submitted are requested to be in a dimensional size, where side “A” equals 2400 pixels, and the minimum resolution of the photo is approximately 72dpi.

It is important to note: about 600 pixels wide (see A above) is the ideal photo width for presentation in our website, and I'll scale your pictures down, but try to maintain photo detail.

Article Submission Guide
1.
Your information requires no particle software format, and can be submitted in “txt” or email format.

2. Members who want their article to be presented in a particular way, should format their article in MS Word format, positioning photos and tables where wanted. Every effort will be made to reproduce your format within the web page table allowed.

3. Article Title: Please target an article title of no more that 24 characters in length, and this includes spaces or other symbols. This title will be used through the web page menu system. Titles in excess of this number of allowed characters will be trimmed or edited to fit the space allowed.

4. Please advise where the article is targeted for inclusion (for example, the Meteor Viewing Tips, Astrophotography, etc).

Astrophotography Photo Submission Guide

1. The first photos submitted by a member should have an overview about the member to accompany the photo summary page. Here the member can provide an overview of their experience, equipment, and preferred software programs used for editing. At any time the member can supply a new overview about themselves.

2. All astrophotography photos are kindly requested to be submitted in accordance to the Photo Submission Guideline above. This will assist with the quick inclusion of your photos to the MPAS site. If you have difficulties in scaling your photos, don't worry, just send them in. Just make sure they are not bigger than 5mb per email.

3. All photos must be supplied with a Messier or NGC catalogue number. Please try to limit the reference codes to only Messier and NGC (if possible of course). If the item has a general name, please also supply this (eg: Orion Nebula). Within the website’s database, a catalogue will be developed where a standard series of object descriptions will be created. These will be attached to your photo to add a description sourced from the Wikipedia.

4. In addition to this, information regarding the taking of the photo, and the software adjustment of the photos must be supplied in the following standard format (an example is provided):

Exposure Data

Realising equipment varies, you can customise what you give (eg, CCD imagers have different info to DSLR users).

This information will be of great interest to your colleagues and other interested people in establishing what was done to achieve the photo taken.

Wrapping up…

All members are welcome to add astronomical content to this new site. Every effort will be made to see your submissions included as promptly as possible.

Thank you.

Kindest regards,

Steve Mohr

Public Viewing Nights

Just to let everyone know, public viewing nights are held every first Friday of the month. Clear or cloudy nights the public viewing night goes ahead. Members man a number of telescopes of various sizes and types, and for those nights where the sky is cloudy, extended astronomical presentations are presented in the MPAS Viewing Centre.

So please come along and enjoy our nights sky.
