Society monthly meeting recorded on 20251015 at The Briars Mount Martha Observatory.
Meeting introduction was by the President, Dr. Peter Skilton, who also showed the highlights of some of this year’s 35th IgNobel Prize winners.
Vice President, Chris Kostokanellis then presented the Astrophotographic challenge for the month, followed by Committee member, Dr. Guido Tack, presenting the Sky for the Month.
The main topic was about “Cosmic Fireworks: The Explosive Fates of Massive Stars”, presented by Astrophysics PhD candidate, Jennifer Quinlan, from Monash University. Her talk not only included some of her research to date on what happens inside large progenitor stars at the point of supernova collapse, but also about her experiences working on the Monash University Nova Rover team, designing a practical Rover to search for biological life on other worlds, and competing nationally and internationally with other Universities with it.
An educational science video then followed: “Why Did The Mars Helicopter Disappear?”, presented by Dr. Derek Muller, courtesy of his Veritasium YouTube channel.
