Society monthly meeting recorded on 20210616 while COVID-19 restrictions prevented an in-person gathering to be held at The Briars Mount Martha observatory.
Meeting introduction and rundown of past month and upcoming events was given by the President, Dr. Peter Skilton.
A video, used with special permission of the Melbourne Marvels website, was shown about “The Disappearance of Frederick Valentich”, by Eamonn Gunning, an English Instructor, local researcher of gripping Melbourne stories, and past MPAS member, who had compiled the story of the mysterious local aircraft disappearance in 1978 over Bass Strait in odd circumstances, using recently released government departmental files.
Society Past President, Peter Lowe, then added to the story with his own personal links to the case.
Vice President, Mark Stephens, then presented “Sky for the Month”.
Other educational videos were shown by Peter Skilton as follows:
“Whatever Happened to Life on Venus?”, presented by Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder, Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies and host of the “Science without the gobbledygook” YouTube channel.
“False Alien Discoveries”, by the same presenter.
“Why Do We See Things That Aren’t There?”, by the same presenter.
“How to Tell Science from Pseudoscience”, by the same presenter.
“How Scientists can Avoid Cognitive Bias”, by the same presenter.
A musical closure with Pachelbel’s Canon in D-Major then followed showing the Aurora as seen from above on the International Space Station. Courtesy of NASA TV/Harmonic/Bamba for(Blackstereo).
