Society monthly meeting recorded on 20220518 at The Briars Mount Martha Observatory.
Meeting introduction and rundown of past month and upcoming events was given by the President, Dr. Peter Skilton.
The main talk was a public lecture hosted by the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics in Ontario, by Asst. Prof. Phiala Shanahan, Physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, on the topic of “The Building Blocks of the Universe”.
Vice President, Mark Stephens, then presented “Sky for the Month”.
Other educational videos, released just a couple of days after the announcement of the SGR A* image, were shown by Peter Skilton as follows:
“The New Black Hole Image Explained”, presented by Dr. Becky Smethurst, Astrophysicist at the University of Oxford.
“A Picture of the Milky Way’s Supermassive Black Hole”, presented by Dr. Derek Muller (Physics Education) of the Veritasium YouTube channel.
